NCAA Tournament: Marquette edges Butler in a thriller, 74-72

Syracuse smothered Montana on Thursday, forcing the Grizzlies to shoot less than 21 percent from the field. The Orange will need to be tough on defense again on Saturday to keep Cal's dynamic duo under wraps.

PHILADELPHIA — It is the one certainty of the NCAA men's basketball tournament: The early rounds will produce a team of unheralded upstarts that topples a perennial power and captivates the nation with its pluck humble background and joyful style of play.

Many felt the Oregon Ducks were better than the 12 seed they were given on Selection Sunday. A week later, they are in the Sweet 16 after knocking off two ranked teams.

In what was arguably the best game of Saturday's third-round matchups, Marquette moved on to the Sweet 16 with a hard-fought victory.

Times editors and reporters supply updates from every game on the second full day of the men's N.C.A.A. tournament.
