Kentucky Derby Recipes: Mint Julep, Cheddar Biscuits

The official drink of the Kentucky Derby doesn't have to be hard to make.

The former Top Chef contestant (he made it to the top five in season 9) and brand new dad – his daughter Arden Rose Lee was born on April 29 – shares his special version of the quintessential cocktail typically served at the premiere horse race.

The 139th running of the Kentucky Derby is today. More than 160000 spectators are expected to attend. Security is especially tight this year, due to the Boston marathon bombings. All backpacks and coolers are now banned.

While all sorts of beverages typically are on offer, the Mint Julep is “the” drink at the Kentucky Derby. This ice-cold cocktail traditionally is served in a silver cup — which the imbiber holds by the bottom and top edges in order
