Turkey assesses damage done by protests

ISTANBUL — Violent protests against the government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan engulfed this city on Saturday, as thousands of demonstrators took to the streets and alleyways in a second day of civil unrest and faced the tear gas and water

While most of the headlines this week have centered on Syria, Sweden (and Switzerland), Turkey has been cooking and today has broken into full-scale riots. As Reuters reports, Turkish police fired tear gas and water cannon

Judge reportedly ordered temporary halt to construction.

Turkey's PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan has vowed to press ahead with plans to redevelopment a park in Istanbul which have sparked violent clashes. Mr Erdogan said he would not yield to "wild extremists" but that police may have used "excessive" force.

Thousands of protesters in Istanbul clashed with police in the most violent rally Turkey has seen in years.
