Cinnamon warning: MDs tell teens not to take the cinnamon challenge

It seems harmless enough, swallowing a little spoonful of a lovely spice like cinnamon, but the so-called cinnamon challenge, as millions of YouTube viewers know, is not a pleasant gustatory experience.

Don't take the cinnamon challenge. That's the advice from doctors in a new report about a dangerous prank depicted in popular YouTube videos but which has led to hospitalizations and a surge in calls to U.S. poison centers.

The journal Pediatrics reports that more than 30 cases in 2012 required medical attention. Further, the American Association of Poison Control Centers reported that the number of harmful cinnamon exposures last year climbed to 222 from 51 in 2011.

A group of doctors issued a warning against a game that involves swallowing a spoonful of cinnamon. They said they have seen a five-fold increase in the number of calls to poison control centers from it. Channel 9 first reported on the "cinnamon

The “cinnamon challenge” is one of those Internet things that you just can't help but see from time to time. Dr. Steven Lipshultz, the lead researcher, said the rats were made to breathe in cinnamon powder one time, then were followed as they aged.
